Although many assume that redundancy is RAID 1's only benefit, the scores presented above illustrate that, depending on the quality of the controller, significant increases in performance may be gained through RAID 1 array relative to a single drive. The reason, as mentioned earlier, is load balancing. Keep in mind that RAID 1 arrays consist of two drives that store the exact same data. As a result, all drives may be utilized simultaneously to service different read requests. Write requests are another matter, however, since each write request must be carried out by all drives to ensure that content remains the same across all disks.
Although the SuperTrak's RAID 1 scores aren't earth shattering, Workstation, File Server, and Database scores post significant improvements over their respective base scores. Random Write performance remains about the same as that of a single drive while Sequential Write performance is somewhat lower.
On the other hand, the Escalade's RAID 1 scores are very impressive. Although they start slightly lower than a single drive under a Linear load, Workstation, File Server, and Database scores skyrocket under Light loads and remain much higher than base scores up through the Heavy load tests. TwinStor in action... we'd be lying if we said that we weren't impressed.
Random Write performance, on the other hand, is much worse than that of a single drive. We're somewhat baffled by the large disparity. While it's expected that RAID 1 random write performance will be equal to or somewhat worse than a single drive, the gap displayed by the Escalade is surprising. Sequential write performance, on the other hand, is virtually exactly the same as a single drive.
