HP 2530-24G Switch Review (J9773A)

The HP 2530-24G Switch features 24 RJ-45 auto-sensing ports and 4 SFP ports and includes full Layer 2 functionality, optional power over Ethernet (PoE+) and a host of management configurations to ensure best practices are met. Designed for small to midsize organizations, the HP 2530 series switches not only provide the 24 RJ-45 ports to maximize ROI for existing infrastructures and to keep expenses at a minimum, but they also feature SFP (small form-factor pluggable) ports for fiber connectivity. The 24 RJ-45 ports also add value and minimize wiring with optional PoE+ capability that enables the ports to power devices using Ethernet cables.

Netgear M7100 Switch Review (XSM7224)

The Netgear M7100 is a fully managed switch that features twenty-four 10GBase-T ports and 4 SFP+ ports and is designed for virtualization and aggregating 10GbE access layer switches. The 24 ports of 10GBase-T use the standard RJ45 Ethernet connection and support Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and 10GbE speeds with auto-negotiation for speeds. The SFP+ ports on the other hand extend support further to 1G/10G fiber uplinks and other DAC connections. The M7100 also features an option to purchase an additional power supply for a highly available solution via two PSUs. The M7100's street price produces a figure close to about $175/port.

Mellanox Announces Virtual Modular Switch (VMS)

Mellanox is announcing the immediate general availability of their Virtual Modular Switch (VMS), an Ethernet data center aggregation switch infrastructure. Mellanox VMS is constructed by connecting Mellanox's SwitchX-2 based 40 and 56GbE systems in a non-blocking topology and is managed using Puppet and Chef management applications. Mellanox VMS provides up to 720 ports of 40Gb/s with latency under 2µs. Simultaneously, it reduces power consumption by as much as 90% and reduces expenses by up to 85%. Beyond that, compared to traditional chassis-based switches, the Mellanox VMS maintains up to 90% of aggregation bandwidth during switch failures.

Netgear ProSafe Plus XS708E 10GbE Switch Review

The Netgear ProSafe Plus XS708E 10GbE switch is part of a new family of ProSafe switches that are designed for SMBs to address the concerns of both enormous network traffic growth and the increasing performance capabilities of networked storage. Most storage arrays are sold with 10GbE these days either standard or as a reasonably priced option and 10GbE is likewise gaining traction in the server market. While gigabit Ethernet remains the standard, the benefits of 10GbE are immense, but a long time stumbling block has been the capital investment in equipment to support the interconnect, especially for small businesses. The key then with the XS708E is both speed and cost - the XS708E brings performance capabilities to the masses, with a street price of close to $100 per port.

OCZ and Mellanox Announce Collaboration

OCZ and Mellanox are announcing their collaboration using Mellanox's ConnectX-3 EN 40 GbE network interface card (NIC) with OCZ's ZD-XL SQL Accelerator to replicate database volumes in a Microsoft SQL Server environment. This integration provides high-end PCIe flash storage performance and high availability (HA) of data with Ethernet connectivity. In order to attain these results, a Microsoft SQL Server environment containing two servers (each using the Mellanox EN NIC and OCZ SQL Accelerator) are connected using Microsoft SQL Server Always-On. Replicating the ZD-XL SQL Accelerator data using the Mellanox NIC to the secondary server maintains HA.

Mellanox Announces SX1012 Ethernet Switch

Mellanox is announcing their SwitchX-2 based SX1012 Ethernet switch which delivers 12 ports of 40GbE for small-scale, high performance computing. The SX1012 also has the industry's smallest footprint with two SX1012 models fitting into 1U of a standard rack. Each of the 12 ports can be configured to deliver as much as 56GbE line rate to increase the performance of the switch. Additionally, the ports can each be split into four standalone 10GbE interfaces. The SX1012 is based on Mellanox’s VPI technology and can run the full capabilities of MLNX-OS. This enables the switch to operate in mutual Ethernet and InfiniBand environments to meet a variety of applications.

HP Announces Software-Defined Network Fabric for Cloud

HP announced its data center network fabric built on HP FlexNetwork architecture that delivers 2X greater scalability and 75% less complexity over current network fabrics while drastically reducing network provisioning time. While some exisiting network fabrics require manual device configurations and limited bandwith, HP's new series of software-defined network (SDN) data center switches provide users with advanced automation and scalability for more bandwith. This new series which includes the HP FlexFabric 12900, the first OpenFlow-enabled core switch that can handle virtualized workloads, supports enterprise-level cloud, big data and virtualization.

Mellanox Announces ConnectX-3 Pro Adapter Cards

Mellanox is announcing its ConnectX-3 Pro 10/40 gigabit Ethernet adapter cards with hardware offload engines that are the first interconnect cards to support overlay networks found in cloud environments including VXLAN and NVGRE. ConnectX-3 Pro cards enable cloud providers to build much larger-scale infrastructures without having to rely overly much on CPU overhead. This is made possible since the overlay technologies are implemented within the interconnect hardware itself. Being the first cards to support overlay networks, the Mellanox ConnextX-3 Pro offers the unique positioning of scaling applications and essentially unlimited tenants.

Netgear Announces Three 10GbE ProSafe SMB Switches

Netgear has announced three new 10 Gigabit switch solutions for small and medium business networks with fewer than 500 users. 10 Gigabit network connectivity is still unusual for SMB due to the expense of 10 Gigabit-capable equipment and a lack of solutions designed for smaller deployments. Each of Netgear's new solutions utilizes 10GBASE-T Copper and ranges in cost from $125 per port to $250 per port.
