Synology DiskStation DS713+ Review

The Synology DiskStation DS713+ is a two-bay NAS designed for use cases that need plenty of power but don't have high-capacity requirements. The DS713+ has a max internal capacity of 8TB (using 2 4TB HDD, one in each bay), a dual core 2.13GHz processor, 1GB of DDR3 memory, and Synology's Disk Station Manager 4.3 software. The DS713+ comes with all types of connectivity, coming with USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Ethernet, and eSATA ports. Though it looks very similar to its predecessor, the DS712+, the DS713+ has two USB 3.0 ports and comes with a 20 IP camera capacity (the DS712+ had no USB 3.0 ports and only supported 16 IP cameras).

Synology has announced that the new RackStation RS214 NAS is now available. The RackStation RS214, a 2-bay, 1U rackmount unit, will be marketed to small creative businesses and other niches where total capacity requirements are modest but customers require sophisticated NAS functionality and performnce. During manufacturer benchmarks, the RackStation RS214 leveraged its 1.2GHz processor and network link aggregation in order to attain an average of 70MB/s write, and over 160 MB/sec read with its drives a RAID1 array and a Windows client system.

Seagate has launched a new family of rackmount NAS products in their Seagate Business Storage line. The 1U designs accommodate standard 3.5" hard drives and come in 4-drive and 8-drive configurations for total capacity of up to 32TB. As the name implies these NAS units are deigned to slot into small business environments that need a storage solution for centralized backup for Macs and PCs, file sharing and the like. The systems run Seagate's NAS OS and provide remote access via Wuala cloud services that supports both mobile computers and offers an app for phones and tablets.
