Today VMware Inc. reported its second quarter 2018 earnings. VMware continues to be one of the top players in the HCI field and looks to stay there with today’s announcement. Going into VMworld 2017, VMware is not only announcing some good numbers, but it looks likely to surpass the milestone of 10,000 customers for vSAN.

HDS Releases Hitachi UCP RS Series

Today Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., announced the release of Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP) RS series. The new UCP RS series is a fully integrated, software-defined data center (SDDC) rack-scale platform, powered by VMware Cloud Foundation. The big benefits to customers that the UCP RS provides is quicker embrace of hybrid cloud, which will deliver faster time to market and pay-as-you-go economics, and it also allows customers to leverage both private and public clouds as extensions of their business. With UCP RS, customers have the choice of either deploying an integrated SDDC stack or building their own using Hitachi's vSAN ready node and VMware software.

In The Lab: Dell Networking S3100 Series Switch (S3148P)

As the StorageReview networking fabric overhaul continues, an important but unsung member of the family includes the Dell Networking S3100 Series Switch. While not as glitzy as the 25GbE networking cards or as fast as the S4048 and Z9100 workhorses soon going into place, the S3100 provides a critical role for the lab. Cisco To Acquire Springpath

Today Cisco announced its intent to acquire the hyperconvergence software company, Springpath, Inc. Cisco will acquire the company for $320 million in cash and assumed equity awards, plus additional retention-based incentives.
