Hitachi Announces Unified Compute Platform Converged Infrastructure Offerings

Hitachi’s (HDS) eleven new Hitachi Unified Compute Platform (UCP) converged infrastructure solutions combine storage, server, networking and software management in integrated packages. The UCP represents Hitachi’s efforts to improve upon first-generation converged infrastructure solutions, particularly on limitations around managing third-party devices in heterogeneous infrastructures.

The Unified Compute Platform's initial offerings span two infrastructure models: UCP Pro and UCP Select. Hitachi UCP Pro provides turnkey solutions built with Hitachi Data Systems servers and storage with industry-standard networking, while UCP Select uses pre-validated reference solutions that can be configured using a broader range servers and software management, including Cisco Unified Computing System servers.

Unified Compute Platform Pro

Hitachi’s initial offering in the UCP Pro family is for VMware vSphere and comes pre-configured with Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform and Brocade Fibre Channel and Ethernet fabric switches, Hitachi Compute Blade 500 server, VMware vSphere and UCP Director. UCP Director software uses the VMware vCenter Server interface to provide views, management and orchestration of the underlying physical infrastructure in addition to its virtual servers.

Unified Compute Platform Select

Hitachi UCP Select reference solutions are validated frameworks that give customers the flexibility to choose from pre-tested elements of the converged system without UCP Director. Solutions can incorporate Hitachi storage and servers and Brocade Fibre Channel and Ethernet fabric switches, or Hitachi storage and Cisco UCS servers and networking.

UCP Select for VMware vSphere with Cisco UCS is an offering that combines Hitachi storage with Cisco UCS servers and networking as a Cisco Validated Design (CVD), and is pre-validated with VMware vSphere. Hitachi has also announced nine additional UCP Select reference solutions as part of the initial release:

  • Citrix Xen Desktop
  • Microsoft Exchange 2010
  • Microsoft Private Cloud
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2012
  • Oracle Database
  • VMware View
  • VMware vSphere
