In The Lab: Dell Networking S3100 Series Switch (S3148P)

As the StorageReview networking fabric overhaul continues, an important but unsung member of the family includes the Dell Networking S3100 Series Switch. While not as glitzy as the 25GbE networking cards or as fast as the S4048 and Z9100 workhorses soon going into place, the S3100 provides a critical role for the lab. Though our office is relatively small, just over 4000SF, we have technology that can benefit from the PoE ports the S3148P version offers. Primarily this includes a dozen or so security cameras that are always keeping a watchful eye over the lab. We also have an assortment of IP phones and wireless access points that mainline into the 48 Ethernet ports the S3100 offers.

Cisco To Acquire Springpath

Today Cisco announced its intent to acquire the hyperconvergence software company, Springpath, Inc. Cisco will acquire the company for $320 million in cash and assumed equity awards, plus additional retention-based incentives. The acquisition is expected to close in Cisco's first quarter of fiscal year 2018, following customary closing conditions and regulatory review.

Rackspace Announces GA Of Private Cloud Powered By VMware

Today Rackspace announced that its Rackspace Private Cloud powered by VMware in generally available. Aside from being generally available today, the company is also announcing that the solution will now be built on VMware Cloud Foundation. This new solution can aide customers as they move to the cloud by now enabling them to use the newest VMware capabilities. It will also enable full software defined data center capabilities such as compute, storage, and networking spanning private and public clouds.

Tegile Launches All-NVMe N-Series Of Storage

Today Tegile Systems announced that it had launched its new all-NVMe storage, the IntelliFlash N-Series. Tegile is calling its N-Series, the first unified All-NVMe array on the market that delivers full enterprise functionality, including robust data management capabilities. Leveraging the performance of NVMe, these new arrays should be able to exponentially accelerate enterprise applications by incorporating the latest generation of solid-state media with NVMe technology into Tegile’s portfolio of IntelliFlash storage systems.

NetApp Reports 1Q18 Earnings

NetApp Inc. announced its earnings for the first fiscal quarter of its 2018. The overall numbers were good though a bit lower than last quarter. The company’s stock slipped a bit the day following the earnings report and, though it had gone up in the quarter, is mainly where it begun at the beginning of the quarter.

Druva Announces Its DMaaS Cloud Platform

Today Druva announced what it is calling the industry’s first Data Management as a Service (DMaaS) solution, the Druva Cloud Platform. The new platform will deliver a unified control plane for data management services across endpoint, server, and cloud application data. Druva states that its new platform is able to reduce both risks and costs (more than 60%) through centralizing the visibility and control of the data.

NVIDIA Announces Quadro Virtual Data Center Workstation Software

Today NVIDIA announced new virtualization software capabilities that turn Tesla GPU-accelerated servers into powerful workstations, Quadro Virtual Data Center Workstation Software (vDWS). This new software aims to deliver organizations with the resources needed for demanding enterprise-wide virtual workspaces. NVIDIA is also announcing improvements to its NVIDIA GRID vPC for mobile workstations.
