Drive:    Western Digital Caviar WD800AB WD800AB
Date Purchased:    First quarter 2003
Current Status:    In use for 10 years and 2 quarters
Comment:    Drive was bought new in March 2003 to replace my first WD800AB, which started developing bad sectors after less than a year of use. Luck with this drive has been much better as it's still running great after six years of moderate use. I don't leave it running 24/7 like most of my other drives but when it's in use, I push it pretty hard downloading and copying files. Power-on hours count is approx. 5,200 as of this post. Despite being over 7 years old, this drive has probably got plenty of life left in it (I have another similar drive with over 40K hours on it and it's still running great). Drive emits an occasional ka-chunk noise during use which sounds unnerving, but doesn't seem to affect normal operation (every WD drive I've used does this; seems to be a fluke in the design). This is still another WD drive that's comfortably outlasted its warranty. A great drive.
