Samsung SE-218BB Ultrathin Optical Disc Drive Announced
At 0.55 inches thick and just over half a pound in weight, Samsung’s new SE-218BB is the world’s thinnest external DVD writer, which should make a splash in the ultrathin notebook and tablet marketplaces. Samsung powers the drive with a single USB port, making it more friendly with port constrained mobile devices that continue to drive the mobile computing market.
- Drive Class: Ultra Portable DVD Writer
- Interface: USB 2.0/3.0
- Loading Type: Tray
- Average Access Time: 190ms (CD-ROM/DVD-ROM)
- Buffer: 1MB
- Bundled Software: Nero 10 Essentials
- Dimensions: 148 x 14 x 144mm
- Weight: 255g
Samsung says that the SE218BB has been designed in response to a changing marketplace that is less interested in reading and writing speeds than mobility, design, and usability. Since many ultrabooks have only 2 USB ports, the SE-218BB’s single USB requirement will be attractive to ultrabook owners who need to power another device like a mouse or thumb drive. For users with Android tablets running Honeycomb OS 3.1 or above, the SE-218BB allows access to DVDs and other optical media content.
The external DVD drive supports:
- DVD±R recording
- DVD-RAM recording
- DVD+R Dual Layer recording
- DVD-R Dual Layer recording
- DVD+RW recording and DVD-RW recording
The Samsung SE-218BB is available now with a MSRP of $59.99.
