SanDisk Announces New Solutions for VMware Horizon 6 and Virtual SAN

SanDisk has announced broad support for VMware Horizon 6 and Virtual SAN with a series of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and end-user computing (EUC) solutions for Horizon 6, which leverage the ULLtraDIMM solid state drive as well as Fusion ioMemory.

ULLtraDIMM and Fusion ioMemory allow customers to deploy high-performance, cost-effective virtual desktop infrastructure solutions and increase virtual desktop density when combined with VMware Horizon 6. With solid-state hardware and software technology, SanDisk indicates that enterprise organizations will be able to select the right deployment option for their particular use case, resulting in greater flexibility and reduced barriers to adoption.

SanDisk’s ULLtraDIMM memory channel storage solution offers new level of performance and end-user productivity for virtualized environments. In addition, SanDisk claims that the ULLtraDIMM will drastically reduce VDI boot storm impact due to its position relative to the server CPU, five micro-second write latency, and scalable performance of up to 1-Million IOPS for a typical deployment of 8-ULLtraDIMMs working in parallel. It also boasts up to 5X faster virtual desktop infrastructure desktop pool creation compared to traditional disk storage solutions. As for Servers using ULLtraDIMM, SanDisk indicates that they will have greater virtual desktop infrastructure density per host, improve virtual desktop infrastructure response times, and reduce the cost per virtual desktop infrastructure session.

When coupled with flash-enabled SAN storage, SanDisk states that the Fusion ioMemory virtual desktop infrastructure solution performs up to 90 percent SAN offload potential as well as up to 16X increased desktop density per server. As a result, this will improve end-user experience for virtual desktop infrastructure deployments in addition to enhancing organizations’ ability to significantly scale their virtual desktop infrastructure environments all the while reducing the total cost per virtual desktop.

SanDisk will demonstrate three new reference architectures that combine ULLtraDIMM and Fusion ioMemory with Horizon 6 and Virtual SAN at VMworld 2014:

  • In-Server ULLtraDIMM: This construction of an 8-node ULLtraDIMM SSD configuration running Horizon 6 will highlight the advantages of utilizing an ultra-low latency, high-performance configuration for virtual desktop infrastructure deployments. In addition, the demonstration will illustrate how ULLtraDIMM can easily handle highly challenging virtual desktop infrastructure issues including providing fast, consistent boot times.
  • Virtual SAN: This live demonstration of a 3-node Virtual SAN cluster for Horizon 6 will highlight how organizations with heavy user virtual desktop infrastructure workloads can benefit from a combination of SanDisk’s enterprise-grade SSDs.
  • SAN Storage: For customers using SAN storage, this reference architecture will showcase the option of using the Fusion ioMemory virtual desktop infrastructure solution and a flash-enabled SAN storage. This configuration provides the ability to increase virtual desktop density by 16X and scale a single, half rack block to accommodate 1500 virtual desktop sessions with fast, consistent performance, to ensure rapid, consistent start-up times for “boot storms.”
