Synology DS114 and DS414 DiskStations Announced
Synology has announced the addition of two DiskStations to their SOHO/SMB product line, the DS114 and DS414. Both new DiskStations are optimized for business use and are designed to make remote access and file sharing quick and efficient.
The DS114 is a single bay solution for users looking to maximize their data’s accessibility. It comes equipped with a 1.2GHz processor, integrated floating point unit (FPU), 512MB of RAM, and can also easily handle the diverse range of DSM 4.3 features. Additionally, the DS114 has two USB 3.0 ports and is equipped with eSATA, making it a useful tool for accessing external disks and printers over a network.
The DS414 is Synology’s newest 4-bay DiskStation, though it uses the same design as its predecessor. Its hot-swappable bays now include Synology's new tool-less drive caddies, which makes installing and replacing drives fast and simple. The DS414 improves on the previous model by upgrading its dual-core processor to 1.33Ghz as well as adding an integrated FPU. This enhancement greatly improves multitasking operations and significantly speeds up thumbnail generation for faster document previews. Additionally, the DS414 includes redundant fans, two gigabit NICs for failover, and link aggregation, making productive uptime its central design philosophy.
The DS114 and DS414 use DiskStation Manager 4.3 (DSM 4.3) to offer a variety of productivity enhancing features, including:
- Cloud Station with selective sync: Keep files, file-types, and folders in sync across all devices
- 256-bit AES encryption on shared folders: Helps to keep private data private
- VPN server (and client): Enables the creation of secure connections between networks
- File Station folder link sharing: Easily share data without having to set up custom permissions
- iOS, Android, and Windows Phone support for convenient remote access
