Synology Releases FS1018, DS218, & Virtual Machine Manager

Today Synology Inc. announced the release of two new desktop NAS devices as well as the official launch of Virtual Machine Manager. Of the two new NAS, one is the FlashStation FS1018, Synology’s first all-flash Desktop NAS. The company is also releasing the 2-bay DiskStation DS218. And Synology announced that Virtual Machine Manager has moved out of beta to its official release.

The FS1018 is a compact form factor, 12-bay, all-flash desktop NAS. Aside from the performance boost and low latency of all the SSDs, the NAS is powered by an Intel Pentium D1508 dual-core CPU and 8GB DDR4 EEC memory, expandable up to 32GB. The FS1018 supports network add-on cards with a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot. Synology has officially released its Virtual Machine Manager. This is the company’s new virtualization software provides the ability to install and run multiple virtual machines including Windows, Linux, and Virtual DSM on Synology NAS. The software also enables users to back up VMs sing tools providing through Btrfs, such as the ability to complete virtual machine snapshots and replication in just a few seconds. Virtual Machine Manager can be ran on the new FS1018.

Both of the new NAS devices run Synology’s award winning DiskStation Manager (DSM). DSM can run as a virtual machine on Virtual Machine Manager via Virtual DSM. Synology goes on to state, that by separating multiple Virtual DSM virtual machines on a single Synology NAS, users can achieve NAS server virtualization while creating a highly resilient, easy-to-manage, and multi-tenant environment.
