Toshiba HK3E2 and HK3R2 eSSDs Announced

Toshiba has announced two new enterprise solid state drive series: the HK3E2, which focuses on value endurance workloads, and the HK3R2, which is designed for read intensive workloads.  Both of the new Toshiba drive support 6Gb/s and add to the company’s portfolio of enterprise storage solutions, featuring a variety of endurance ratings to meet a variety of use cases.

Value Endurance HK3E2

The HK3E2 is available in capacities up to 800GB in a 2.5-inch standard form-factor (7mm Z-height).  In addition, the new drive is designed for mainstream enterprise applications including exchange mail servers, web servers, database servers, indexing servers and data center storage workloads. The HK3E2 Series also features three drive writes per day (DWPD) endurance specification for five years with a random 4KiB enterprise workload.

Both eSSDs are come with power loss and end-to-end data protection features as well as a common controller and mechanical design. In addition, the HK3R2 and HK3E2 Series use Toshiba’s proprietary QSBC (Quadruple Swing-By Code) error-correction technology, which is their efficient error correction code (ECC) that helps to protect customer data from corruption caused by NAND flash memory media wear. As a result, it can improve reliability and extend the lifespan of Toshiba SSDs. Both new series also feature a Toshiba-designed SATA SSD controller and Toshiba 19nm second generation MLC NAND flash.
