Silicon Motion announced two new SSD controllers, SM2504XT and SM2324, at Computex 2025. The new controllers target high-performance computing and next-generation portable storage markets. They represent the company’s latest efforts to push energy-efficient, high-throughput SSD technologies further into mainstream and professional use.
## **SM2504XT: Power Efficiency Meets Gen5 Performance**
The SM2504XT is designed for PCIe Gen5 x4 SSDs and complies with the NVMe 2.0 protocol. Built on a 6nm process, the controller is quoted to deliver sequential read speeds of up to 11.5GB/s and write speeds of 11.0GB/s. Random operations reach up to 1.7 million IOPS for reads and 2.0 million IOPS for writes.
This controller supports DRAM-less designs, making it ideal for compact and efficient client SSDs. It includes four NAND channels operating at up to 3,600 MT/s, optimized for 3D TLC and QLC NAND. A key architectural feature is the Separate Command Address (SCA), which enables parallel command and data handling, reducing latency under load.
Under active use, the power draw is capped at 2.4W, dropping to just 1mW in PS4’s low-power state. Compared to earlier PCIe Gen5 controllers, it improves power efficiency by up to 30%, positioning it well for use in AI PCs, gaming desktops, and workstations where both speed and energy savings are critical.
It also features comprehensive data protection, including Silicon Motion’s NANDXtend error correction with a 4K+ LDPC engine, end-to-end data path protection, secure boot, and real-time encryption options.
## **SM2324: USB4 Controller for High-Speed Portable Storage**
Aimed at mobile users, content creators, and edge computing tasks, the SM2324 is Silicon Motion’s first fully integrated USB4 SSD controller. It’s a single-chip solution that merges NAND control with USB Power Delivery (PD 3.1), reducing design complexity and component count for device manufacturers.
It supports sequential read and write speeds up to 4,000MB/s via the USB4 Gen3x2 interface (40Gbps). Built using a 12nm process, the controller manages four NAND channels at speeds up to 1,600 MT/s and can address storage capacities up to 32TB.
The SM2324’s architecture ensures broad host compatibility and supports backward compatibility with all legacy USB versions. It also includes advanced security features such as AES 256-bit encryption, end-to-end data protection, integrated SRAM ECC, and optional fingerprint security support.
With its small 9mm x 9mm footprint and compliance with USB Type-C and MFi specifications, the SM2324 is engineered for ultra-portable storage devices that need to balance speed, capacity, and energy efficiency.
