Mellanox 40GbE with vSphere 5.5 Support Everywhere at VMworld 2013

Mellanox has long been synonymous with high-speed interconnects, but this year's VMworld has taken the company to a new level of visibility in the storage community. First off, the ConnextX-3 40GbE driver has been successfully integrated into VMware vSphere 5.5 which makes it easier to deploy 40GbE in virtualized environments. While 10GbE is slowly finding its way into enterprise storage arrays, Mellanox is showing that 40GbE is a worthwhile jump from standard Ethernet as vendors consider what's next for interconnect. Mellanox is showing a sustainable throughput rate of more than 37Gb/s using servers equipped with Mellanox’s ConnectX-3 40GbE NICs connected by SwitchX 40GbE switches and the company’s high performance QSFP+ cables. Several other vendors are showcasing storage solutions around the Mellanox gear as well including Micron, OCZ and LSI.

Mellanox Announces Virtual Modular Switch (VMS)

Mellanox is announcing the immediate general availability of their Virtual Modular Switch (VMS), an Ethernet data center aggregation switch infrastructure. Mellanox VMS is constructed by connecting Mellanox's SwitchX-2 based 40 and 56GbE systems in a non-blocking topology and is managed using Puppet and Chef management applications. Mellanox VMS provides up to 720 ports of 40Gb/s with latency under 2µs. Simultaneously, it reduces power consumption by as much as 90% and reduces expenses by up to 85%. Beyond that, compared to traditional chassis-based switches, the Mellanox VMS maintains up to 90% of aggregation bandwidth during switch failures.

Netgear ProSafe Plus XS708E 10GbE Switch Review

The Netgear ProSafe Plus XS708E 10GbE switch is part of a new family of ProSafe switches that are designed for SMBs to address the concerns of both enormous network traffic growth and the increasing performance capabilities of networked storage. Most storage arrays are sold with 10GbE these days either standard or as a reasonably priced option and 10GbE is likewise gaining traction in the server market. While gigabit Ethernet remains the standard, the benefits of 10GbE are immense, but a long time stumbling block has been the capital investment in equipment to support the interconnect, especially for small businesses. The key then with the XS708E is both speed and cost - the XS708E brings performance capabilities to the masses, with a street price of close to $100 per port.
