According to EMC, ECS is a software-defined, object-based cloud storage platform that provides global, petabyte-level scalability with compelling economics to customers. With ECS’s latest up it makes another strong addition to EMC’s suite of software-defined storage (SDS) solutions. ![](https://www.storagereview.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/StorageReview-EMC-ECS.png)ECS is designed to handle the incredible amount of object data that is now being generated by trends such as mobile devices, social media, and the Internet of Things (IoT). This gives it a leg up over traditional storage platforms that aren’t designed to handle these huge amounts of object data. Since being [introduced in 2014](https://www.storagereview.com/emc_elastic_cloud_storage_appliance_ecs_announced), ECS has seen success with customers such as ATOS SE. ECS is also being more compatible with ISV solutions such as Hortonwork. **New features include:** - Software Defined Storage: ECS can be deployed on certified hardware or as a turnkey appliance. - A Multipurpose platform: With native support for multiple protocols (like AWS S3, OpenStack Swift, HDFS), ECS breaks down dedicated storage silos. With native NFS support, ECS can also support file data without the need for a file gateway. - Smart storage: With ECS, users can search metadata across exabytes of unstructured data without a dedicated database. This enables data analytics that can harvest valuable insights while greatly simplifying cloud and IoT application development. - Low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO):  Today’s release further lowers the storage overhead for cold archive scenarios. A new single-pane-of-glass view that provides complete system health can help customers to reduce operational costs. - Data Protection: With “data at rest” encryption support, users can apply protection to business-critical data. ECS also fully complies with SEC 17 a-4(f) and CFTC 1.31(b)-(c) regulations. **Availability** EMC ECS 2.2 is generally available today.
