Aimed at small office and home offices (SOHO), the DS216+ is a 2-bay NAS server that is designed to protect, store, and share their data. The NAS offers customers a powerful and power efficient device that can also transcode videos on-the-fly. Like all of Synology’s devices, the DS216+ runs the award-winning OS, DiskStation Manager (DSM). ![]() The DS216+ comes with performance claims over 111MB/s for both read and write and encrypted speeds of 113MB/s read and 109MB/s write. To hit these speeds the DS216+ uses an Intel Celeron Processor N3050 and Intel AES New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) encryption. The new NAS also performs on-the-fly H.264 4K to 1080p video transcoding. With this function media enthusiasts will be able to stream their HD media regardless of bandwidth or potential device limitations. The DS216+ will be implementing Btrfs file system just like the [DS716+](https://www.storagereview.com/synology_diskstation_ds716_nas_review) and [RC18015xs+](https://www.storagereview.com/synology_rackstation_rc18015xs_review). This file system will allow advanced data protection by enabling point-in-time snapshot and restore, built-in data integrity checks, metadata mirroring, as well as quota control for shared folders. And like many Synology NAS devices, the DS216+ will come with tool-less, hot-swap drive trays. **DS216+ specifications:** - CPU: Intel Celeron N3050 dual-core 1.6GHz, burst up to 2.16GHz - Memory: 1GB of DDR3 - Max capacity: 16TB (8TB x 2) - Floating Point - Hardware Encryption Engine (AES-NI) - Hardware Transcoding Engine: H.264 (AVC), MPEG-2 and VC-1; maximum resolution: 4K (4096 x 2160); maximum frame rate per second (FPS): 30 - Storage: - Drive Bay(s): 2 - Compatible Drive Type - 3.5" SATA III / SATA II HDD - 2.5" SATA III / SATA II HDD - 2.5" SATA III / SATA II SSD - Max single volume: 108TB - Hot swappable drives - External ports - USB 2.0 Port: 2 - USB 3.0 Port: 1 - eSATA Port: 1 - USBCopy        - File System - Internal Drives: - Btrfs - EXT4 - External Drives: - Btrfs - EXT4 - EXT3 - FAT - NTFS - HFS+ - Dimensions (HxWxD): 165 mm x 108 mm x 233.2 mm - Weight: 1.25 kg **Availability and pricing** The Synology DS216+ is available now and starts at $299.99.
