Intel Unveils Xeon E3-1500 v5 Processors

Today, Intel took the wraps off its brand-new family of Xeon processors: the E3-1500 v5 line. By including the latest Iris Pro P580 into Intel’s Xeon processors, the company hopes to better equip data centers for the ever-increasing strain put on them by video streaming. Additionally, the chips aim to reduce the overall power needs of servers by enabling stations to ditch the need for PCIe graphics cards to deliver content.

This release comes as the demand for 4K streaming content is set to increase with more and more providers adding this to their libraries. To this end, the new Xeon chips have High-Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) support to assist transcoding of 4K content. Able to deliver two 4K/30p streams 8 HEVC 1080/30p, or 18 1080/30p AVC streams simultaneously, these chips are designed to work better with modern hardware to increase performance and lower power draw.
