The 24 ports copper ports use standard RJ45 Ethernet connections and auto-negotiate for transfers, while the SFP ports can support large data transfers and other mission-critical requirements. Designed with built-in web management, the GS724T offers businesses a cost-effective switching solution priced below $10/port. ![](https://www.storagereview.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/StorageReview-Netgear-ProSafe-GS724T.jpg) Where the ProSafe GS724T really makes its bread and butter is with economics. The unit runs around $205 (street pricing), putting the per-port-price right around $8.50. For smaller organizations that don’t require the robust throughput capabilities of more advanced switches with stacking, 10Gbase-T support or the more complex management functionality, Netgear delivers a lot of value with the GS724T. The Netgear ProSafe GS724T Switch is available now with a street price around $205, which includes a lifetime warranty and a year of tech support. **Netgear ProSafe GS724T Specifications** - Performance - MTBF: 282,515 hours (\~19 years) - Buffer Memory: 512KB - Bandwidth: 48 Gb/s - Network latency: 4.5 us for 1000 Mbps with 64 bytes - 24 copper x 10/100/1000 - 2 ports SFP - Operating temperature: 32° to 131°F (0° to 55°C) - Power consumption: 21.5W - Dimensions (HxWxD): 43 x 440 x 260 mm (1.7 x 17.3 x 10.2 in) - Weight: 2.87 kg (6.33 lbs) - NETGEAR Lifetime Warranty with a year of tech support **Design and Build** The Netgear ProSafe GS724T ships with Netgear’s standard color scheme in an easy to rack-mount design. As is pretty standard in this market, almost all of the connectivity is up front aside from the power receptacle. ![]() The front of the Netgear ProSafe GS724T features the copper 10/100/1000 and SFP ports on the right side. The copper ports are in two 12-port segments (each 2×6), which are followed by the SFP ports. On the left side, there are LED indicator lights and a pinhole reset button. ![]() The top of the device features Netgear branding, and the sides are ventilated for passive cooling. **User Interface** While there are of course differences within interfaces related to specific device functionality, Netgear has a predominantly unified user interface via the ProSafe Control Center web GUI, and any IT administrator familiar with Netgear products won’t have any trouble utilizing the GUI. The ProSafe Control center provides access to managing traffic with QoS, VLAN, etc, in a unified interface. Compared to the fully managed switches, the Smart models have a reduced featureset which makes management easier, but also separates them cost-wise from more expensive managed switches. With that said, the interface is the same Web GUI, which makes cross-management very easy since settings are all located in the same area. ![]() As with the [Netgear M7100 Switch](https://www.storagereview.com/netgear_m7100_switch_review_xsm7224) that we recently reviewed, the device view for the ProSafe GS724T enables users to view their device and which ports are currently in-use. Active ports are highlighted in green, and clicking the connected ports provides configuration settings. ![]() **Conclusion** The Netgear ProSafe GS724T Switch is designed for small businesses that require cost-effective connectivity to keep applications such as video conferencing and VoIP running smoothly by utilizing the device’s twenty-four copper 10/100/1000 ports and two SFP 100/1000 ports. At roughly $8.50/port, the GS724T is affordable for small businesses looking for an IT solution that need a switch to match their growth. Simultaneously, the device provides a high availability option by supporting fail-over when stacked, as well as hot-swap functionality.
