LaCie Introduces 2big Dock With Thunderbolt 3

Today LaCie announced an update to its popular 2big professional 2-bay RAID storage solution. The new 2big now supports Thunderbolt 3 technology granting the device the bump in performance that comes with the new interface. The device is yet another in the long line of beautifully designed devices from LaCie and designed by Neil Poulton. Aimed at creative professionals such as photographers and videographers, the 2big provides several ports to connect devices, when some modern notebooks do not.

Two things that a storage device needs to make creative professionals' lives easy are storage and speed: the 2big has both. This updated device has a maximum capacity of 20TB (a 25% increase over the previous version). 20TB can translate into up to 650 hours of 4K 30fps footage or 200,000 raw images. But having a ton of capacity and slow transfer times is no good, so the 2big now uses the Thunderbolt 3 interface to hit speeds of up to 440MB/s or roughly transfer one hour of 4K footage in one minute. Another benefit of higher speeds is the lack of lag when browsing photo libraries in Adobe Lightroom.

As mentioned, some notebooks are giving up ports to make them thinner. Unless users have a really good need to have a thinner device, lack of space when traveling maybe, this isn’t always a good thing. With that in mind, the LaCie 2big Dock adds plenty of ports to simplify workflows. On the front of the device are SD and CF Card slots as well as a USB 3.0 port. The rear of the device has a DisplayPort (enabling the device to be connect to high-resolution monitors, including 4K), two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and a USB-C port that can power certain notebooks.

Features include:

  • Seagate IronWolf Pro enterprise-class drives and RAID optimization for superior power management and reliability
  • LaCie RAID Manager that easily monitors system’s health with audible alarm and email alerts
  • Efficient cooling with aluminum enclosure and thermoregulated fan for professional reliability
  • A five-year limited warranty

The new LaCie 2big Dock with Thunderbolt 3 will be available in three capacities, 12TB, 16TB or 20TB, later this summer. LaCie will be showcasing the device at the NAD show in Las Vegas this year, booth # SL4527.
