Marvell Announces New NVMe DC Chipset Solutions

Today at OCP 2018, Marvell announced the launch of its new NVMe-based chipset solutions. These solutions include the Intelligent 88NR2241 NVMe Switch, 8-Channel 88SS1098 NVMe SSD Controller and 16-Channel 88SS1088 NVMe SSD Controller. The new solutions aim to optimize current and emerging workloads specifically for the cloud and enterprise.

There are several services and technologies, such as AI and machine learning, which need to be done in the data center. The problem with some of these new workloads is that the potentially have storage requirements that the new flash technology and form factors are designed to address. Marvell states that its new NVMe chipsets are capable of powering the larger Enterprise Data Storage Form Factors (EDSFF), Next Generation Small Form Factors (NGSFF) and various customized form factors. They go on to claim that they can provide the ability to increase storage capacity, performance and overall workload efficiencies.

To manage resources between several NVMe SSD controllers and workload-offload accelerators, Marvell has introduced its 88NR2241 intelligent NVMe switch. The company states that the switch enhances multi-tenant, virtualized cloud and enterprise data center environments by offering high quality of service and predictable storage performance using integrated virtual functions. For performance, the 88NR2241 switch is quoted at providing up to 6.4GB/s of throughput and up to 1.6M random IOPS.

For its new NVMe SSD controllers, Marvell is rolling out the 88SS1098 and the 88SS1088. Both of these controllers support single and dual port functionality, the NVMe 1.3 standard, and open channel architectures and both are powered by Marvell’s fourth generation of NANDEdge LDPC error correction technology. For performance the new controllers can hit up to 3.6GB/s throughput and up to 800K random read IOPS by leveraging Marvell’s system-on-chip (SoC) processor architectures.

The new solutions support up to industry-leading 32TB capacities, allowing support of a full range of cloud and enterprise SSD solutions - including M.2, NGSFF, U.2, PCIe add-in-cards, EDSFF and custom-built. This gives data center storage architects the tools they need to optimize and innovate their services and workloads.

The new NVMe chipset solutions will be showcased by Marvell at the OCP Summit 2018 in San Jose, California March 20-21.
