Toshiba Updates External STOR.E Drives To Include SuperSpeed USB 3.0

Today Toshiba announced they are updating their STOR.E External drive lineup to include the newer and faster USB 3.0 interface. While not Thunderbolt, it is a step in the right direction, with more laptops offering USB 3.0 as standard, even on lower configurations. Backwards compatiblity is also strong with USB 3.0, working with older interfaces, albeit at a slower 30MB/s connection speed. The updates cover the 2.5-inch STOR.E STEEL S and the 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch STOR.E ALU 2S.

Seagate Momentus XT SD24 Firmware Update

Almost a year ago we reviewed the first hybrid SSD/HDD (well, first in a long time); the Seagate Momentus XT. Since that time it has remained the one and only drive in the hybrid drive category and gained a ton of popularity in the enthusiast market. While offering a very good mixture of performance and capacity, which can be crucial in single drive notebook configurations, there were limitations like fast spin-down times and the small cache size that many hoped would be fixed or improved. Today we look at the latest firmware patch, dubbed SD24 for the Momentus XT, which helps fixes this drive's most complained about flaw; lag associated with spinning down too quickly at idle.

6TB Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II Released

Western Digital has announced a 6TB My Book Studio Edition II dual-drive storage system. Designed largely for Mac users who are creating, editing and storing video and photo files, the My Book Studio Edition II offers a quad interface (eSATA, FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0), Time Machine support and a top capacity of 33% than the previous model. 

Seagate Enterprise SSDs and HDDs Updated

Seagate has announced several updates to their enterprise hard drive and SSD lines. The Pulsar.2 is an MLC NAND based SSD that offers capacities up to 800GB and the Pulsar XT.2 leverages SLC NAND to deliver Seagate's fastest drive speeds to date. On the hard drive front, the Savvio 15K.3 gets a capacity boost to 300GB while the Savvio 10K.5 goes up to 900GB, both in a 2.5" form factor. Seagate also updated the 3.5" Constellation ES.2, bumping it up to 3TB. 

OCZ Technology Acquires Indilinx

Today OCZ Technology announced that they will be purchasing Indilinx, which is one of the primary manufacturers of SSD controllers and software. Currently OCZ uses Indilinx in a variety of products, including the Z-Drive and Onyx-series SSDs.
