Branded as Brocade Gen 8 Fibre Channel, the portfolio is designed to secure storage for the emerging quantum era while automating SAN operations using embedded SAN AI technology. Taken together, the new platforms are positioned for organizations that require deterministic performance, robust security, and in-depth operational visibility across high-value storage networks, particularly where AI, large-scale databases, and latency-sensitive transactional workloads converge. ## 128G FC with AI and Quantum-Safe Security Broadcom’s Brocade Storage Networking business is steering Fibre Channel into a new phase where traditional SAN performance requirements intersect with two shifts: AI-driven workloads and future quantum-based threats. According to Dennis Makishima, Vice President and General Manager of Brocade Storage Networking at Broadcom, the Gen 8 platforms are designed to modernize enterprise storage infrastructure by combining 128G performance with embedded SAN AI for automated infrastructure management, while also hardening the environment against emerging quantum risks. In effect, these platforms are framed as a secure, AI-aware foundation for mission-critical and AI workloads. ![ G80 Switch Brocade Gen 8]() At the architectural level, the Brocade X8 Directors form the core of large, scalable SAN fabrics. At the same time, the Brocade G820 acts as a versatile mid-range switch that can be deployed as an edge switch or top-of-rack (ToR) aggregation device. Together, the Gen 8 portfolio delivers three pillars: - 128G Fibre Channel performance for bandwidth- and latency-sensitive workloads - Quantum-safe security with post-quantum cryptography - AI-driven SAN autonomy via SAN Fabric Intelligence and automated traffic optimization The target environments are modern data centers that cannot tolerate downtime or unpredictable performance, such as those in financial services, healthcare, large enterprises, and AI-heavy environments where storage is tightly coupled with GPU and CPU compute tiers. ## Quantum-Safe by Design Enterprises are facing a more sophisticated threat landscape as AI accelerates attack capabilities and quantum computing moves from theoretical to practical over the coming years. Broadcom’s Brocade Gen 8 portfolio is designed with those future risks in mind. The platforms incorporate quantum-resistant 256-bit encryption and additional post-quantum cryptography algorithms to help safeguard data and infrastructure from potential attacks enabled by future quantum computers. The goal is to provide a SAN layer that protects long-lived, sensitive data against “harvest now, decrypt later” scenarios in which encrypted data is intercepted today, with the expectation that it will be decrypted later. Beyond cryptography, Gen 8 also hardens the SAN itself. Strong access controls limit who and what can interact with critical fabric components, and privilege scoping adheres to the principle of least privilege. By minimizing the exposed attack surface and tightening role-based access control, the platforms aim to reduce risk even if perimeter defenses are compromised. For security-conscious customers, especially in regulated industries, Gen 8’s quantum-aware design provides a forward-looking story that aligns storage networking strategy with longer-term risk mitigation. ## AI-Powered SAN Autonomy and Fabric Intelligence Brocade Gen 8 introduces AI-driven capabilities into SAN management, reducing manual intervention and improving operational consistency. Rather than relying solely on traditional monitoring and rule-based tuning, the platforms employ SAN AI to learn patterns, adapt to changing conditions, and respond to anomalies in the fabric. At the core is SAN Fabric Intelligence, which provides: - End-to-end visibility across all connected devices and components in the SAN fabric, including virtual machines - A holistic fabric-level view to surface key points of interest, such as congestion hot spots, anomalous behavior, or emerging performance bottlenecks - Automated analysis that reduces time spent on manual correlation across switches, hosts, and storage arrays This comprehensive view enables operations teams to quickly drill down into problematic flows, zones, or ports, thereby accelerating troubleshooting and maintaining optimal performance. For organizations where SAN teams support multiple lines of business and mixed workloads, the AI-driven approach is designed to improve both responsiveness and stability. ## Performance-Aware Fabric Tuning Brocade’s Adaptive Traffic Optimizer is another core Gen 8 feature focused on dynamic traffic management. Rather than treating all workloads equally, the fabric can learn and adapt to changing application demands in real time. The feature works by: - Balancing traffic dynamically across performance groups and virtual channels to maintain service levels for critical applications - Monitoring flows to identify those that are adversely impacting others - Automatically isolating disruptive or noisy flows so they do not degrade performance across the broader fabric For customers running mixed AI, OLTP, backup, and batch workloads on the same SAN, Adaptive Traffic Optimizer provides a mechanism to preserve performance for the most critical applications while still accommodating background or lower-priority traffic. This is particularly relevant as AI training and large-scale data movement increasingly compete with traditional enterprise workloads for bandwidth and low-latency paths. **Engage with StorageReview** [Newsletter](https://www.storagereview.com/storage_newsletter) |  [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/user/StorageReview "Opens in a new window") | Podcast  [iTunes](https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/storagereview-com-storage-reviews/id1060681115 "Opens in a new window")/ [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/show/1y6VnznABhHeOSMOmbDTz0 "Opens in a new window") |  [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/storagereview/ "Opens in a new window") |  [Twitter](https://twitter.com/storagereview "Opens in a new window") |  [TikTok](https://www.tiktok.com/@storagereview?
