# Proxmox VE Embraces NVIDIA vGPU for AI, ML & Virtual Workstations

by Lyle Smith on March 20, 2025

Proxmox Server Solutions has announced that its open-source virtualization platform,  [Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE)](https://www.storagereview.com/news/proxmox-ve-8-3-enhanced-features-for-enterprise-virtualization), now includes support for NVIDIA vGPU. Starting with NVIDIA vGPU 18, Proxmox VE users can leverage GPU virtualization, improving performance and expanding compatibility for graphics-intensive and AI development workloads in virtualized environments.

***UPDATE:** We have a deep dive into configuring  [Proxmox vGPU](https://www.storagereview.com/review/proxmox-vgpu-guide-your-gpu-deserves-more-than-just-passthrough) and performance results with an L40S GPU.*

## What is Proxmox VE?

Proxmox VE is a powerful virtualization platform with integrated management tools and a user-friendly web interface. It makes it easy for organizations across industries to deploy and manage high-availability, clustered virtual environments. Its flexible design lets users build and oversee large-scale infrastructure deployments across different regions, streamlining the integration of multiple applications for improved efficiency.

## Why vGPU Support in Proxmox VE Matters

Over the last few years, Proxmox VE has emerged as a viable alternative to VMware’s ESXi, especially as enterprises seek cost-effective and open-source solutions for virtualization. While Proxmox has traditionally been a favorite among homelab enthusiasts and smaller IT teams, its continued push into the enterprise space shows that it wants to be taken seriously as a fully capable hypervisor.

Adding NVIDIA vGPU support is a big win and a necessary one. GPU-accelerated workloads are no longer niche; AI, machine learning, and 3D visualization have made them a core requirement for many organizations. By integrating vGPU into Proxmox VE, Proxmox addresses a key enterprise demand: efficient GPU resource sharing across virtualized environments.

Larger enterprises need more than just a capable hypervisor; they need features that allow them to scale workloads efficiently, keep costs down, and manage resources intelligently. NVIDIA vGPU is another step in Proxmox’s evolution into a genuinely enterprise-ready solution, making it a stronger contender against the increasingly expensive VMware alternative.

## vGPU Benefits

Integrating NVIDIA vGPU into Proxmox VE allows businesses to share a single GPU across multiple VMs, helping cut costs and make better use of resources. GPU-heavy tasks—like AI training, machine learning, and graphics rendering—can run simultaneously on the same hardware, boosting overall efficiency and reducing downtime.

Proxmox and NVIDIA have worked closely to make the integration seamless, giving enterprises more control over their GPU resources. Adjusting resources on the fly helps keep performance steady, even when handling demanding workloads.

The NVIDIA vGPU software suite accelerates innovation in a virtualized environment with ongoing support and maintenance. NVIDIA vGPU is available in three editions:

- **NVIDIA RTX Virtual Workstation (vWS)**: Virtual Workstations for creators, engineers, and developers using compute-intensive applications.
- **NVIDIA Virtual PC (vPC):** Virtual Desktop (VDI) for knowledge workers who use office productivity applications snd multimedia.
- **NVIDIA Virtual Applications (vApps):** Application streaming with Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) solutions.

Deploying NVIDIA vGPU software on Proxmox VE is straightforward, enabling easy performance verification and efficient GPU management. This simplifies handling compute-intensive workloads while maintaining consistent and reliable performance.

This integration also shows Proxmox’s push to make its platform more capable and user-friendly for businesses. With NVIDIA vGPU support, Proxmox VE offers an even more flexible and cost-effective option for handling demanding virtualized workloads.

## Availability and Requirements

NVIDIA vGPU support on Proxmox VE requires a Proxmox subscription at the Basic, Standard, or Premium level and an active NVIDIA vGPU entitlement. For the best performance, Proxmox recommends using enterprise-grade hardware.

Businesses looking to verify hardware compatibility can consult the [NVIDIA Qualified System Catalog](https://marketplace.nvidia.com/en-us/enterprise/qualified-system-catalog/?limit=15) for detailed specifications. Proxmox has also published a comprehensive guide on [configuring NVIDIA vGPU within the Proxmox Virtual Environment](https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/NVIDIA_vGPU_on_Proxmox_VE).
