Amazon Offers Rack Server Preloaded with AWS Storage Gateway

On September 18th Amazon started offering a Dell EMC PowerEdge R640 Rack Server that is pre-loaded with AWS Storage Gateway software. The 1U, 19-inch rack mountable server has Intel Xeon processors, 128 GB of memory, 6 TB of usable SSD storage for your locally cached data, and redundant power supplies. AWS Storage Gateway service enables hybrid storage between on-premises environments and the AWS Cloud. It integrates on-premises enterprise applications and workflows with Amazon’s block and object cloud storage services through industry standard storage protocols as well as a host of other AWS services. Typical use cases include backup and archiving, disaster recovery, moving data to S3 for in-cloud workloads, and tiered storage.

AWS Storage Gateway has been available through both the AWS Management Console and as a VM for some time. Amazon is now offering this proven service as a physical hardware appliance as well for the US East (Northern Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon) and US West (Northern California) AWS regions. The hardware appliance can be set up in only a few minutes; a major convenience that might make Storage Gateway easier to use for teams that have a hard time finding the resources to set it up previously.

Like all Storage Gateways, the rack supports three storage interfaces: file, volume, and tape. Each gateway rack can provide only one type of interface at a time:

  • The file gateway enables you to store and retrieve objects in Amazon S3 using file protocols, such as NFS. Objects written through file gateway can be directly accessed in S3.
  • The volume gateway provides block storage to your applications using the iSCSI protocol. Data on the volumes is stored in Amazon S3. To access your iSCSI volumes in AWS, you can take EBS snapshots which can be used to create EBS volumes.
  • The tape gateway provides your backup application with an iSCSI virtual tape library (VTL) interface, consisting of a virtual media changer, virtual tape drives, and virtual tapes. Virtual tape data is stored in Amazon S3 or can be archived to Amazon Glacier.

Availability

Immediately in US East (Northern Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon) and US West (Northern California) AWS regions.
