Amazon Web Services Announces AWS Backup

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) announced a fully managed, centralized backup service for customers to back up their data across AWS services and on-premises, AWS Backup. AWS Backup protects storage volumes, databases, and file systems while making it easier for customer to meet their business and regulatory backup compliance requirements. Users will have a single service that allows them to configure and audit the AWS resources backed up, automate backup scheduling, set retention policies, and monitor recent backups and restores.

Users will have a single service that allows them to configure and audit the AWS resources backed up, automate backup scheduling, set retention policies, and monitor recent backups and restores.

Most companies are moving at least part of their data and applications to the cloud and several are starting in the cloud. There are several benefits to cloud usage but it can lead to issues such as having data distributed across multiple services. For those that leverage AWS for their cloud needs, they already have backup capabilities and if they want to automate scheduling, enforce retention policies, and/or consolidate backup activity that stretches over several services they can with custom scripts. AWS Backup eases with process with a centralized place to manage backups across AWS. Users can create new polices for backups, scheduling, and retention, across AWS services, in a few clicks.

According to the company, AWS Backup is initially integrated with Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS), Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), and AWS Storage Gateway, with support for additional services planned for the future. Customers can also back up on-premises application data through the AWS Backup integration with AWS Storage Gateway, providing a common way to protect their on-premises data in the AWS cloud.
