Cray Inc. recently announced a cooperation with Haas F1 Team in the FIA Formula One World Championship. The third-year American team has stated the will be working with the computational capacity of a Cray CS500 cluster supercomputer, using AMD EPYC 7000 processors to handle the large computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations, starting with the 2019 season.

The organization chose Cray to efficiently perform CFD analysis for more accurate wind tunnel tests, improving aerodynamics, and predicting and reducing drag.

Fomula One teams are required to be equipped with a reliable infrastructure that allows for the development of state-of-the-art race cars. With that in mind, Haas F1 Team performed detailed aerodynamic analysis, requiring continuous updated in order to remain competitive. Haas F1 Team is able to maximize the benefits of its CFD analysis within the FIA imposed limits by using the efficient and dependable Cray and AMD EPYC processor-based system.

Equipped with a Cray ClusterStor L300 storage system and AMD EPYC processors, the Cray CS500 supercomputer is expected to arrive to Haas F1 in December 2018. With the high-performance computing expertise of Cray, combined with the design of the system and its ability to manage demanding simulation and analytics workloads, the Haas F1 team will be able to further optimize aerodynamics and more accurately predict and reduce drag, downforce and flow patterns around its race cars.
