Today, Cumulus Networks released the latest version of NetQ, 3.0. NetQ is a realtime network monitoring and analytics tool. JR Rivers and Nolan Leake founded Cumulus Networks in 2010. NetQ is one of their two main products. The other is an open-source Linux (Debian based) operating system for network switches.

With NetQ 2.4 less than five months old, it is both surprising and impressive to see Cumulus rolling out a new major version in 3.0 so soon. The new features in 3.0 aren’t minor either. They definitely merit moving up to a new major version number. Included in the updated software are Lifecycle Management (LCM) capabilities that enable NetQ to deliver upgrade and configuration management. This kind of broad-spectrum support isn’t easy to add, but it is an increasingly essential tool.

Customers can now easily install new switches and other networking devices. Cumulus NetQ 3.0 adds the ability to push a golden configuration from a centralized location. This better enables companies, and IT teams to enforce standards, deploy configlets to help automate repetitive configuration tasks. NetQ also helps with the task of identifying differences between the default configuration, and however a device is currently configured. NetQ Upgrade Management also added similar support for simplifying software upgrades.

NetQ is also retaining its existing abilities like:

  • Snapshot and Compare – compare the live state of the network before and after maintenance or configuration change.
  • What Just Happened (WJH) – detailed information about any packet drop on any device on the network for any reason (available on Mellanox switches). WJH collects full packet information on drops related to layer one, buffer, ACL, routing issues, and more.
  • Validation – view and validate network state, intent, and configuration.
  • Trace – verify connectivity between two devices, either on-demand or per a desired schedule. This includes layer two, layer three, and overlay based networks.
