Dell EMC announced the PowerProtect DD Series Appliances last September, targeting data protection for the modern digital economy. This month, the company has announced new features to the appliance’s product line, focusing on capacity and performance. Critical enhancements on this release comprise the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD9900 appliance, the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE), and DDOS 7.2 and PowerProtect DD Management Center (DDMC).

This month, the company has announced new features to the appliance’s product line, focusing on capacity and performance. Critical enhancements on this release comprise the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD9900 appliance, the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE), and DDOS 7.2 and PowerProtect DD Management Center (DDMC).
PowerProtect DD appliances aim to deliver a fast, secure, and efficient solution for data storage protection. They are optimized for multi-cloud data protection and meet future demands via a multidimensional appliance portfolio. With the enhancements of this latest release, Dell EMC keeps pushing this product line as the next generation of data domain.
Starting with Dell EMC PowerProtect DD9900 appliance, the capacity support has been expanded from 1.25PB to 1.5PB in a single rack. When factoring in up to 65x data deduplication, PowerProtect DD9900 can now manage up to 97.5PB of data in a single rack. Not only was capacity improved, but performance as well. With the introduction of DDOS 7.2, restore performance reports considerable advances. When compared to DDOS 7.1, peak restore performance increase by up to 25%. And when pairing DD9900 and DDOS 7.2, restore speeds have increased by up to 45% when compared to running DDOS 7.2 on DD9800.
PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition has increased capacity and performance as well. DDVE now delivers up to 3.1x faster in-cloud restore performance when compared to DDOS 7.1 when deployed in AWS, Azure, and GCP public clouds. It also supports M5 instances in AWS. Besides, TCO has been improved for specific workloads that are backed up using dense markers, such as Oracle databases in the public cloud, by reducing the metadata growth.
Lastly, the new version of PowerProtect DD Management Center (DDMC) is highlighted by the introduction of scheduled multi-systems upgrades to manage environments at scale. Before this update, upgrading a DD appliance involved manually upgrading every appliance. With DDOS 7.2, Dell EMC now gives customers the ability to schedule multi-system upgrades from DDMC. A precheck option is also included to help ensure that the upgrades go smoothly.
More options and features are available with DDOS’s latest software release, version 7.2. DDOS 7.2 is currently available for download for all customers when purchasing PowerProtect DD.
