Today Dell EMC announced new Data Domain protection storage systems as well as software upgrades to Data Domain. The new appliances will be flash-enabled, giving them, what Dell EMC is calling, industry-leading speed and scalability as well as enhanced protection for virtual environments. Dell EMC is also introducing the latest version of Data Domain’s operating system, OS 6.0, as well as Data Domain Cloud Tier.

As far as the Data Domain’s appliances go, there will be four new models: DD6300, DD6800, DD9300 and DD9800. The DD6300 is a turnkey, all-in-one appliance that is aimed at smaller and midrange customers. The larger models are aimed at larger enterprises with the DD9800 being 7x more scalable, 1.5x faster, and can support 5x more streams than the nearest competitor, according to Dell EMC. The new appliances will be running the next-generation DD OS 6.0. This new operating system introduces the Data Domain Cloud Tier, as well as advanced integration with Hadoop.

Dell EMC claims that the total volume of data that can be managed through a single appliance can be increased by 200% with the new Data Domain Cloud Tier software. A 200% increase would bring maximum logical capacity to 150PB. Dell EMC state that Data Domain, using Data Domain Cloud Tier software, is the only protection storage to natively tier de-duplicated data to public, private, or hybrid clouds. The cloud options for tiering include Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage and Virtustream Storage Cloud.

Adding flash to Data Domain not only allows for higher performance and more density, it also enhances the user experience in virtual environments. The company states that the new Data Domain can access protection instances of VMs 20x faster. And customers can now boot up VMs using a protection copy of the virtual machine files directly from Data Domain instead of needing to restore the VM to a separate primary storage system.
