Dell Software Announces Foglight for Virtualization Updates

Dell Software announced updates to its rebranded Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition 6.8 which enables administrators to manage data center and desktop virtualization, and Dell has also enhanced Foglight for Storage Management 2.5 which offers reports on both physical and virtual storage. Resulting in their acquisition of Quest, Dell Software gained access to the Quest line of products which they have now rebranded to unify product nomenclature. Amongst a slew of updates, Foglight for Virtualization now includes performance monitoring support for VMware View and has new implementations enabling better VDI tracking from the application level to the server and storage level. Dell’s release comes as more organizations shift to virtualization and the necessity of tracking performance breakdowns is increasing.

VDI and VMs often use the same hardware infrastructure for their performance, but they have different resource demands and users. VMs require dedicated performance monitoring systems, but those systems need to be connected as their resources are shared. Foglight for Virtualization finds and solves issues within VMware View, while still continuing to operate all features in vOPS Server Enterprise without impacting vCenter performance. Foglight for Virtualization additionally offers complete control over virtualized server, cloud and VDI environments by offering solutions to administrators through its system of analysis, advice and automation.

Additional New Features in Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition 6.8

  • Proactive monitoring of VMware View without using multiple tools
  • Support for Windows Server 2012
  • Enhanced installation agent and agent host management
  • New “Getting Started” wizard
  • More granular virtual data collection

Also updated, Foglight for Storage Management 2.5 is an optional cartridge to Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition. It now offers physical storage performance reporting on top of its virtual reporting. This provides users with full VM to physical LUN monitoring. Further updates to the software comprise: LUN latency reporting, NPIV support, and the ability for customers to buy it as a stand-alone cartridge or as a cartridge to Foglight for Virtualization.

Foglight itself is a unified performance-monitoring platform that has individual pluggable cartridges that can operate on their own or cooperate with other cartridges in the line. The integration offers users the most enhanced end-to-end monitoring of storage and server layers, decreasing time spent troubleshooting and fixing performance issues.

Pricing and Availability

Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise 6.8 is now available as a 45-day trial with pricing starting at $799/socket. Foglight for Storage Management 2.5 is also available now for a 45-day trial with its pricing starting at $499/socket.
