EMC has released a Service Pack, SP1, for the latest version of its unified backup and recovery software, NetWorker 8.2. The service pack is designed to enhance and expand on the new features in the 8.2 update that was released in April of last year.

We went over the new features in NetWorker 8.0 here. The 8.0 update introduced features such as deeper integration with EMC Data Domain deduplication systems, expanded enterprise application support, improved management and security features, and a reduction in back up times by up to 50%. NetWorker 8.2 had several new capabilities and features including:

  • Enhanced the Data Protection Continuum with NAS snapshot management
  • Expanded protection of virtualized environments with a plug-in enabling Hyper-V administrators with visibility and control of data protection services
  • Empowered application data owners with advanced support for SQL Server and new support for SAP HANA
  • Enabled healthcare customers with more integrated primary and protection storage in the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH
  • Data Domain Secure Multi-Tenant configurations
  • Data Domain Boost over WAN
  • VMware Instant Access
  • VMware vCenter visualization from the NetWorker Management Console
  • VMware VMDK level backup and restore
  • SQL Server 2014 support and SQL Server 2014 hybrid cloud protection via on-premises secondary database backup
  • Mobile support for EMC Backup and Recovery Manager (iOS, Android)

SP1 builds off of the above capabilities and enhancements:

NetWorker Snapshot Management for NAS

Integrated snapshot management support for NAS devices was introduced in 8.2. With the new service pack, NetWorker now supports NetApp Cluster Mode deployments as well as NetApp SnapMirror and SnapVault for snap and replicate workflows important enabling faster RTO/RPO’s for operational recovery. All recovery options are supported from either local or remote copy, including granular recovery.

DD Boost over Fibre Channel for HP-UX

While deeper Data Domain Boost integration was released in 8.0, and further enhancements, including DD Boost over WAN, were released in 8.2, SP1 takes integration with DD Boost one-step further with support for DD Boost over Fibre Channel for HP-UX 11i v3 on Itanium platforms with support for DD Boost on the client or storage node for backup of file systems, enterprise databases, and SAP.

VMware and Hyper-V

SP1 enables dual network support with the VMware Backup Appliance. This dual network support is aimed at minimizing the impact of backup traffic on production environments by separating production and protection networks. The clone-controlled replication process with Data Domain for VMware backups has been further optimized to increase your backup performance by up to ten times. The Disaster Recovery process of the VMware based Software Defined Data Center has been greatly streamlined as well, allowing vCenter environments to be recovered at a secondary vCenter with just a few clicks and little administrator interaction. Operational recovery of individual VMs to a different vCenter is enabled through this same process. An Overview page has been added to the plug-in for System Center Virtual Machine manager that was introduced in 8.2. The new Overview page enables users to quickly and easily visualize protected and unprotected VM’s with the ability to drill-down for further details.

NetWorker Module for MEDITECH

NetWorker Module for MEDITECH 8.2 offered an industry-first in support of EMC arrays with MEDITECH’s next gen MBI/MBF API’s. SP1 has new support for VMAX VP_SNAP and VNX VNX_SNAP technology for IDR In-Frame snapshot workflows. RecoverPoint support of VMAX (including VMAX3), VNX, and XtremIO All-Flash Arrays via VPLEX has also been added.

Localization and Currency

The new service pack offers broad support of heterogeneous implementation. SP1 supports documentation and binaries in Japanese, French, Korean, and Simplified Chinese with the NetWorker Management Console, Server, Storage Nodes, and Clients. And the Service Pack includes RHEL 7, SUSE 12, Mac OS X 10.10, and more.
