Flexera to Acquire Spot by NetApp for Enhanced Multi-Cloud Cost Management

Flexera has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Spot by NetApp FinOps business from NetApp. NetApp acquired Spot in 2020. This acquisition aims to strengthen Flexera’s capabilities in addressing the growing demands of organizations managing multi-cloud costs and FinOps requirements.

The combined offering will deliver a comprehensive FinOps solution by integrating Spot’s AI and ML-powered technology with Flexera’s hybrid cloud expertise. This solution is designed to enhance financial accountability, optimize cloud operations, and align with the growing scope of the FinOps framework, which now encompasses data centers, SaaS applications, public clouds, software licensing, and sustainability initiatives.

The acquisition reflects the growing demand for intelligent cloud management as organizations increasingly rely on AI applications that drive exponential cloud resource consumption. Flexera’s President and CEO Jim Ryan emphasized this trend: “A tsunami of artificial intelligence applications is exponentially increasing organizations’ consumption of cloud resources. Yet, we hear from many organizations about the difficulty in answering basic questions like ‘What technology services do we use?’ and ‘Why are our cloud bills so high?’. Our acquisition of Spot is the next step in Flexera’s strategic plan to provide organizations with a full panorama of their technology spend and risk across the entire IT ecosystem.”

Enhanced Offerings and Strategic Value

Integrating Spot’s technology into Flexera’s FinOps portfolio will add advanced features such as Kubernetes cost management and commitment management. These capabilities will provide continuous automation, optimization, and insights into cloud infrastructure and applications. The enhanced portfolio will cater to diverse customer needs, from hybrid cloud operations to containerized environments.

The acquisition will enable Flexera to build a broader FinOps-managed service providers (MSPs) network. This ecosystem allows Flexera to expand its reach, address evolving customer requirements, and attract new DevOps users to its robust customer community.

Haiyan Song, NetApp’s Executive Vice President of Intelligent Operations Services, remarked on the strategic nature of this transaction: “This decision reflects NetApp’s sharpened focus and underscores our commitment to intelligent data infrastructure and long-term growth opportunities. After a thorough evaluation, it is clear that Flexera’s established expertise and global reach provide the ideal environment for the Spot business to thrive and scale.”

A Proven Track Record in FinOps Excellence

Flexera has a well-established history of advancing its FinOps and cloud cost management capabilities through internal innovation and strategic acquisitions. The acquisition of Spot builds on Flexera’s earlier investments in cloud cost management, including its 2018 purchase of RightScale.

The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
