HPE has announced a critical update to its HPD8 firmware, which fixes a bug that results in data loss after 32,768 hours (3 years, 270 days 8 hours) of operation. Those who do not follow through with the update will require complete restoration of their drive(s) after the failure occurs, as both the SSD and data cannot be recovered. HP notes that SSDs put into service during the same time are also expected to fail simultaneously.
SSD manufacturers notified HPE of the faulty firmware with certain SAS SSD models in specific HPE server and storage products, including HPE ProLiant solutions and D3000/D6000/D6020 disk enclosures.
