HPE Greenlake Central Released

Today, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) released Greenlake Central. HPE has been offering IT-as-a-Service for the last three years under the Greenlake brand name. Greenlake Central is a new software platform that is supposed to unify their existing offerings by providing customers a single software platform they can use to manage their clouds. Hewlett Packard Enterprise was spun off from HP in 2015 to focus on enterprise computing. Since then, they’ve spun off several of their divisions and are now down to just providing servers and cloud platforms, primarily on an as-a-Service basis.

It’s been about a year since we last covered HPE Greenlake, so it’s worth reviewing what Greenlake is and isn’t. At its core, Greenlake is a subscription model for IT services and a suite of software tools. It is not a cloud provider, but it will help you manage your use of a public cloud like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The same subscription to Greenlake could also be used by customers to manage on-premise infrastructure, too, although that might mean using a different interface.

Or, at least, that’s how it used to work. Now, Greenlake offers co-located infrastructure options through partnerships with CyrusOne. CyrusOne and HPE have worked out a deal allowing customers who want to use both to do so with a single contract, invoice, and point of contact with CyrusOne. Still not technically a cloud provider, but it is edging closer to that status.

Despite aiming to bring the simplicity of the cloud to on-premise infrastructure, HPE Greenlake has previously been a multitude of different tools and services. HPE Greenlake Central brings all of those existing tools together into a single software platform. This should hopefully provide customers with a more straightforward, more consistent experience. The platform includes monitoring and management options for security, capacity, compliance, and resource utilization for customer’s public and/or private clouds. Central also aims to allow users to self-service more and provides tools for “self-provisioning” a virtual machine or a web server within the platform.
