Today during their IGEL DISRUPT 2020 event in Nashville, Tennessee, IGEL announced the general availability of Linux client support for Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktop. IGEL states that they are the first company to offer a Linux-based client that is validated for use with Windows Virtual Desktop. This support should make it easier for customers to migrate Windows workspaces to Azure.
Back during its 2019 Ignite event, Microsoft announced that it would be enabling Linux device support for Windows Virtual Desktop. The company also stated that IGEL would be a key hardware partner in this enablement. The two companies working together closely have resulted in IGEL OS to be the first Linux operating system available to deliver validated support for Windows Virtual Desktop-powered devices.
Two weeks ago, Microsoft ended its support for Windows 7 devices. This leaves several older (and perhaps underpowered) devices out on the market that can either be retired or repurposed. Organizations can leverage IGEL OS to convert any x86, 64-bit device into a Windows Virtual Desktop-powered cloud endpoint. Most importantly, these devices will be able to run Windows 10 from the Azure cloud. This means that the older devices can be put right back to use with IGEL’s easy to use OS that offers built-in enterprise-level security with features including two-factor authentication.
IGEL will showcase IGEL OS-powered devices used with Windows Virtual Desktop during DISRUPT 2020, the Cloud Workspaces Forum, to be held in Nashville, January 27-29, and Munich, February 4-6.
