Today Intel released its latest processor family, the Intel Xeon E-2200 processors. This new CPU family is aimed at entry-level servers for small to medium businesses. Intel states that the E-2200 family can also enhance cloud security for service providers.

The new CPUs are 4-, 6-, and 8-core and available in single-socket configuration only. The 8-core versions are stated as being able to enable servers to operate at frequencies reaching up to 5.0 GHz (with Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0) and feature expanded capacity for hardware-enhanced security using Intel Secure Guard Extensions (Intel SGX). As stated, these processors are aimed at small business. The Xeon E-2200 provide essential performance, reliability, security and expandability while supporting the latest server operating systems. These systems can be easily monitored through Intel Server Platform Services.

Intel also claims that the Xeon-2200 processor family can enhance cloud security for cloud service providers. As stated, the new CPUs support Intel SGX that can deliver an additional layer of hardware-based security and manageability features to the data center. SGX provides a partition to users’ application code and data into processor-hardened, encrypted areas of execution in memory. Intel has contributed the Intel SGX Software Development Kit to the Confidential Computing Consortium project in the Linux Foundation and should result in a growing ecosystem of develops using the new software.
