At Autodesk University today in Las Vegas, Lenovo announced a new set of workstations including the ThinkPad P40 Yoga. The ThinkPad P40 Yoga is the first workstation that allows sketching directly onto the screen through a stylus similar to a tablet. Lenovo states that this ability gives creative professionals will be able to sketch their designs onto a high performance and reliable mobile workstation. Lenovo is also introducing two other workstations, the ThinkPad P50s and ThinkStation P310.

For centuries, sketching has been a starting point from the germination of an idea to realize final product be it a painting, building, movie, or supercomputer. The process of sketching hasn’t changed so much but the tools in which sketching is carried out has changed radically. From cave walls with charcoal to the modern use of Cintiqs or iPad Pros, the tools have evolved but the sketch itself is not much different. However in the modern ear sketches need to be transferred to a workstation to render the design in graphic-intensive applications such as AutoCAD.

The ThinkPad P40 Yoga is the world’s first multimode mobile workstation. The Yoga gives creative professionals great flexibility as it can work in four different modes, including laptop, stand, tent and tablet. The Yoga enables sketching precision through a highly responsive pen and touchscreen powered by the Wacom Active ES technology, offering a full, 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity on a high-res (2560 x 1440) IPS display. For years Wacom has created different styluses and graphic tablets for creative professionals. Wacom has worked closely with Lenovo to delivered the Think Pen Pro, which is included with the P40 Yoga, to deliver the closest ‘pen to paper’ experience so far. The ThinkPad P40 Yoga comes with the rechargeable ThinkPad Pen Pro as well as different tips for varied levels of tactile feedback.

Aside from its sketching abilities, the ThinkPad P40 Yoga is a full performance workstation with an NVIDIAQuadro M500M GPU with 2GB VRAM, an Intel 6th Generation Core i7 CPU, up to 16GB of RAM, and 512GB SSD storage. The P40 Yoga should have more than enough power to run graphic-intense programs. Another first for a Lenovo workstation, is the use of Lenovo’s innovative Lift ‘n Lock keyboard. When switching to tablet mode, the frame lifts around the keys to prevent users from accidentally pressing them.

Lenovo is also introducing two other workstations, the ThinkPad P50s and ThinkStation P310. The ThinkPad P50s is a more affordable and thinner and lighter workstation that offers the same high performance of other Lenovo mobile workstations. The new P50s features a 3K IPS display and up to 17 hours of battery life. Building off of the success of the P300, the ThinkStation P310 is an entry level workstation featuring an Intel Xeon E3-1200v5, the latest NVIDIAGPU technology, up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM, and support for FLEX drives with Samsung M.2 NVMe SSDs.

Availability and pricing

The ThinkPad P40 Yoga, ThinkPad P50s, and ThinkStatoinP310 are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2016. The ThinkPad P40 Yoga will start at $1399, the ThinkPad P50s will start at $1299, and the ThinkStationP310 starts at $729.
