LSI has announced the TrueStore RC5100 read channel IC for hard drives, the industry’s first to be based on 28nm silicon. The RC5100 enables increased drive capacity, higher yield and lower power consumption. LSI is currently demonstrating the read channel to OEMs.
What is a read channel?
A read channel translates the magnetically encoded data on a hard drive into electronic signals that can be understood by the host computer. The TrueStore RC5100 is key to driving increased platter densities and ultimately higher hard drive capacities. LSI’s new low-density parity check (LDPC) iterative decoding architecture and other technologies like shingled magnetic recording (SMR) are part of the magic that will lead to higher density and lower power consumption.
The RC5100 is compatible with all 2.5" and 3.5" notebook, desktop and enterprise drives.
Availability
The LSI TrueStore RC5100 will be available to OEM customers in the first quarter of 2012.
