Red Hat Announces That It Acquired Permabit

Red Hat Inc. announced that it has acquired the assets and technology of Permabit Technology Corporation. This means that Red Hat Enterprise Linux will now have Permabit’s data deduplication and compression capabilities and thus a more efficient storage footprint. The transaction is expected to have no material impact to Red Hat’s guidance for its second fiscal quarter ending Aug. 31, 2017.

Quantum’s StorNext 6 Is Shipping

Announced back in April, Quantum’s StorNext 6.0 is now shipping. New features include:

  • FlexSync provides continual synchronization of files across storage systems by leveraging enhanced metadata monitoring in the file system to recognize changes instantly and reflect those changes on another system. This approach avoids the need to lock the file systems to identify changes, reducing synchronization time from hours or days to just seconds. As a result, users can also set policies that automatically trigger near-instant copies of files so that they are available at multiple sites, enabling different teams to access data quickly and easily whenever it’s needed. In addition, by providing automatic replication across sites, FlexSync offers increased data protection.
  • FlexSpace allows multiple instances of StorNext, located anywhere in the world, to share a single archive repository. Users at different sites can store files there, as well as browse and pull data from the archive. In addition, shared archive options include both public cloud storage ― Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud via StorNext’s existing FlexTier capability ― and private cloud storage based on Quantum’s Lattus object storage or, through FlexTier, third-party object storage such as NetApp StorageGRID, IBM Cleversafe and Scality RING. Also, as with FlexSync, FlexSpace provides fully automated movement of files according to policies, thereby increasing efficiency and enhancing data protection through off-site storage.

Pivot3 HCI Is Now Certified On VMware Horizon Cloud

Pivot3 announced that its vSTAC platform is now certified with VMware Horizon Cloud. This means that customers that utilize VDI will now be able to deploy them on Pivot3's HCI solutions and reap the benefits of hyperconverged as well as VDI. The two companies state that organizations will be able to deploy virtual desktops and applications to thousands of users in under an hour, all while saving on costs and reducing complexities.

Intel Will Feature Its FPGA Storage Technology At FMS

At Flash Memory Summit (FMS) 2017 Intel will feature its field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Combining FPGAs with Intel SSDs, user can create elastic pools of NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF) storage. This new storage solution will offer new levels of performance for enterprises that will allow better efficiency and performance in Big Data and enterprise applications as well as real-time analytics. Intel will be working with Attala Systems to demonstrate this new technology at booth #839.
