This week’s News Bits we look at a number of small announcements, small in terms of the content not the impact they have. Red Hat announces that it acquired Permabit. Cisco acquires Viptela. Quantum’s StorNext 6 is shipping. Pivot3 HCI is now certified on VMware Horizon Cloud. Intel will feature its FPGA storage technology at FMS. Apposite releases its Netropy WAN Emulator version 3.0.
Red Hat Announces That It Acquired Permabit
Red Hat Inc. announced that it has acquired the assets and technology of Permabit Technology Corporation. This means that Red Hat Enterprise Linux will now have Permabit’s data deduplication and compression capabilities and thus a more efficient storage footprint. The transaction is expected to have no material impact to Red Hat’s guidance for its second fiscal quarter ending Aug. 31, 2017.
Cisco Acquires Viptela
Cisco announced that it has finished its acquisition of the software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) company, Viptela. The company was acquired for $610 million cash and assumed equity awards. Cisco will begin to invest to bring the SD-WAN solutions to market.
Quantum’s StorNext 6 Is Shipping
Announced back in April, Quantum’s StorNext 6.0 is now shipping. New features include:
Pivot3 HCI Is Now Certified On VMware Horizon Cloud
Pivot3 announced that its vSTAC platform is now certified with VMware Horizon Cloud. This means that customers that utilize VDI will now be able to deploy them on Pivot3's HCI solutions and reap the benefits of hyperconverged as well as VDI. The two companies state that organizations will be able to deploy virtual desktops and applications to thousands of users in under an hour, all while saving on costs and reducing complexities.
Intel Will Feature Its FPGA Storage Technology At FMS
At Flash Memory Summit (FMS) 2017 Intel will feature its field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Combining FPGAs with Intel SSDs, user can create elastic pools of NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF) storage. This new storage solution will offer new levels of performance for enterprises that will allow better efficiency and performance in Big Data and enterprise applications as well as real-time analytics. Intel will be working with Attala Systems to demonstrate this new technology at booth #839.
Apposite Releases Its Netropy WAN Emulator Version 3.0
