Last year at SIGGRAPH, NVIDIA announced its RTX technology, among other announcements. This year the company has announced that RTX is in many more applications expanding the reach of the technology through the industry. NVIDIA is also announcing NVIDIA RTX studio laptops and mobile workstations and vendors such as Dell, HP, Lenovo and BOXX.
RTX technology is designed to unleash the full potential of NVIDIA’s Turing architecture. As we said previously, the Turing architecture is a result of over 10,000 engineering-years of effort. The RT Cores are stated as accelerating the computation of how light and sound travel in 3D environments at up to 10 GigaRays a second. The other cores leveraged, Tensor, are stated to accelerate deep learning training and inferencing, providing up to 500 trillion tensor operations a second. This combination can simulate the physical world at 6x the speed of the previous Pascal generation.
Since its release, many have seen the benefits of the technology with several applications embracing it. RTX is especially beneficial in applications that leverages ray tracing and AI. The new applications that are embracing NVIDIA RTX include:
On the hardware side of things, ten new designs of laptops and mobile workstations that support NVIDIA RTX were announced bring the total models to 27. These new laptops and workstations will bring real-time ray tracing, advanced AI and ultra-high-resolution video editing to mobile users and those on the go. The designs come from Lenovo, Dell, HP, and BOXX. The computers leverage either GeForce RTX 2060 GPUs or Quadro RTX 5000. The new models include:
NVIDIA also launched its NVIDIA Studio Driver. This driver optimizes creative apps that are updated around SIGGRAPH including OTOY Octane Render, Blender, Autodesk Arnold, Maxon Cinema 4D, Substance Painter by Adobe and Magix VEGAS Pro. The new driver adds support for 30-bit color in OpenGL apps such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere for all GPUs.
NVIDIA will be at booth 1303 and 1313 at SIGGRAPH this year.
