Proxmox VE 8.0 Stable Release Now Available

Proxmox Server Solutions has announced the stable release of Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) 8.0, the latest version of its server virtualization management platform. Based on Debian 12 (“Bookworm”), this major release offers a seamless upgrade path for users of Proxmox VE 7.4 and older.

The updated version also leverages a newer Linux kernel 6.2 as the stable default, along with the latest versions of QEMU 8.0.2, LXC 5.0.2, ZFS 2.1.12, and Ceph Quincy 17.2.6, and other leading open-source technologies for virtual environments.

Proxmox VE 8.0 provides an intuitive web-based user interface and essential management tools for the convenient management of individual hosts or entire data centers. The platform enables users to use out-of-the-box tools, accessible through web browsers or the command line.

The latest version introduces several notable enhancements. The integration of Ceph Quincy brings a new level of convenience as it enables users to easily run and manage Ceph storage directly from any cluster node, simplifying the setup and management of hyper-converged infrastructures.

Additionally, the inclusion of a stable Enterprise repository expands access to all Proxmox customers with an active subscription. Another key feature is the introduction of authentication realm sync jobs, which automate the synchronization of LDAP-based realm users and groups, including LDAP and Microsoft Active Directory, at regular intervals. This automation reduces management complexity and minimizes configuration errors, giving an overall smoother experience for administrators.

Network Resource Integration with Access Control: Software-defined Networking (SDN) network resources are now available as objects in the access control subsystem (ACL) of Proxmox VE. Fine-grained permissions for host network bridges and VNets can be granted to specific users and groups, enhancing network security and control.
Resource Mappings: Proxmox VE 8.0 introduces the ability to create and manage mappings between resources (e.g., PCIe or USB devices) and nodes within a Proxmox VE cluster. This enables offline migrations for VMs with passed-through devices, enhancing flexibility. The mappings are represented in the ACL system, allowing users to be granted access to specific devices without requiring root access.
Secure Lockout for Two-Factor Authentication/TOTP: User accounts with repeated failed login attempts during the second factor authentication process are automatically locked out, providing an additional layer of security. Unlocking can be achieved using a recovery key or by an administrator.
Text-Based User Interface (TUI) for Installer ISO: A text-based user interface has been added as an optional feature for the installer ISO, addressing potential issues when launching the GTK-based graphical installer on new and older hardware.
