Today, Pure Storage released Purity for FlashArray (Purity//FA) version 6.0. Purity//FA is the company’s eponymous flagship software. John Colgrove and John Hayes founded Pure Storage 11 years ago in 2009. The company sells storage-as-a-service using all-flash servers bundled with their custom software.

Purity//FA has previously used a variable block metadata engine to store data. Version 6.0’s key innovation is the introduction of a custom-designed unified block-and-file storage architecture. The new architecture targets organizations that primarily use block storage, like Pure Storage’s existing customers, but still want separate network-attached storage (NAS). Pure Storage hopes to convince customers to adopt their new system for their NAS needs in addition to their current uses by saving customers the trouble and expense of running two incompatible environments. With the introduction of file format data, comes the need to provide backup options for it. Purity//FA 6.0 addresses this need with Veeam and CommVault backup solutions.

According to the company, version 6.0 comes with a host of other enhancements and new capabilities in addition to the unified block-and-file storage architecture. The first of the new capabilities is the option to attach public volume tags to data sets to allow for easier identification and categorization. Most of the other updates are focused on improving resiliency. 6.0 offers data access control using two-factor or multi-factor authentication. The company also says it has made a number of enhancements to its existing disaster recovery features. The most notable of these is support for VMware Site Recovery Manager to safeguard virtualized workloads.

Purity//FA 6.0 also offers customers the opportunity to test drive an enhancement the company is currently developing. Adventurous customers can try out a technical preview that adds cloud storage targets on the Google Cloud Platform, where Pure Storage’s snapshots can be replicated for offsite storage and reuse.
