Quest NetVault Extended Architecture Aligns Backup and Recovery with Service Continuity

Quest Software has announced NetVault Extended Architecture (XA), a new platform that unifies Quest’s data protection technologies in order to align backup and recovery to client SLAs. While legacy data protection software often focuses on servers and other infrastructure, the new NetVault solution is aimed at management and protection in mixed physical, virtual, and cloud environments which require a unified solution to meet continuity and availability requirements.

Rather than offering a single consolidated administrative view intended for the generalist backup administrator, NetVault XA provides specialists such as DBAs, application administrators, and VMware administrators access to customized views and workflows that map to the specific SLAs associated with each role. With this emphasis on focused visibility and access, administrators can leverage specialized data protection tools to perform granular, platform-specific backup and recovery tasks.

Quest intends NetVault Extended Architecture to become the centerpiece of its data protection portfolio, helping customers to deploy and manage all of Quests’s backup and recovery technologies, including the NetVault, vRanger, LiteSpeed, and Recovery Manager. This extensible architecture is designed to grow seamlessly from SMB to enterprise storage as an organization’s needs evolve.

NetVault XA Technology Overview

  • An adaptive policy engine that enforces specific data protection controls and requirements.
  • Built-in SLA validation through alerts to proactively let users know whether or not an SLA is achievable based on established backup and recovery parameters.
  • NetVault XA can act as a gateway to multi-vendor clouds, enabling users to manage on-premise and cloud assets from a single interface.
  • Role-based reporting empowers users to develop reports that map directly to specific SLAs they are responsible for maintaining.
  • Remote, cloud-based access and operating capabilities give users access anywhere, including the ability to manage and control backup and recovery operations directly from iPads.

Availability

The first iteration of NetVault XA will be generally available in the second half of 2012, and will be incorporated into future releases of NetVault Backup, NetVault SmartDisk, and vRanger. NetVault XA will be available to customers as a downloadable thin-client at no additional charge.
