Samsung Now Shipping The PM1633a 15.36TB Enterprise SSD

Samsung has announced that it is now shipping the PM1633a, which is touted as the industry’s largest SSD drive at a whopping 15.36TB in capacity. Unveiled last year at the 2015 Flash Memory Summit, the PM1633a leverages a 12Gb/s SAS interface and is designed specifically for use in enterprise storage systems. This huge capacity point will certainly allow businesses to optimize both their physical and digital server spaces and will help lower total cost of ownership.

Unveiled last year at the 2015 Flash Memory Summit, the PM1633a leverages a 12Gb/s SAS interface and is designed specifically for use in enterprise storage systems. This huge capacity point will certainly allow businesses to optimize both their physical and digital server spaces and will help lower total cost of ownership. 

The PM1633a is able to offer 15.36TB of data storage on a single SSD by combining 512 of Samsung’s 3^rd generation 256Gb V-NAND memory chips, which are stacked in 16 layers to form a single 512GB package for a total of 32 NAND flash packages. Samsun indicates that the PM1633a drives offer a serious performance and reliability upgrade compared to its predecessor, the PM1633a, which uses Samsung’s last generation, 32-layer, 128Gb V-NAND memory.

Performance-wise, the PM1633a SSD is quoted to deliver random read and write speeds of up to 200,000 and 32,000 IOPS respectively, while sequential read and write speeds are expected to reach upwards of 1,200MB/s. In addition, Samsung’s new high capacity SSD is equipped with an advanced controller units that support the 12Gb/s SAS interface as well as a total of 16GB of DRAM. Samsung adds that the drive has a highly dependable metadata protection mechanism and features a data protection and restoration software tool in the event of a power outage. The 15.36TB PM1633a can also supports 1 DWPD.

Availability

The 15.36TB density model will be the first drive released; however, Samsung will add other capacity options to PM1633a SSD line-up (7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB and 480GB) sometime later this year.
