SanDisk Introduces New Reference Architecture For VSAN 6

Today SanDisk Corporation introduced three new reference architectures designed for VMware Virtual SAN 6.0. These solutions utilize SSDs and Fusion ioMemory PCIe application accelerators include: Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) Solution with All-Flash Virtual SAN, VMware Horizon Virtual Desktop and Applications Solution with All-Flash Virtual SAN, and Horizon Virtual Desktop Solution with Hybrid VMware Virtual SAN. SanDisk’s SSD and PCIe technologies combined with VSAN enables customers to deploy business critical applications, databases, virtual desktops and other IT workloads with less effort and gain greater performance.

SanDisk’s SSD and PCIe technologies combined with VSAN enables customers to deploy business critical applications, databases, virtual desktops and other IT workloads with less effort and gain greater performance.

As the market continues to adopt software-defined storage, businesses need for their applications to be fast, responsive, and available. Customers who combine SanDisk flash products with VMware VSAN will be able to consolidate their IT footprint, increase application QoS, and derive huge benefits from server virtualization and virtual desktops. SanDisk states that the combined technologies have already produced some impressive results including three times the concurrent users, four times the virtual desktop density, sixteen times reduced power and cooling, and forty times faster report generation.

The new reference architectures are:

  • Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) Solution with All-Flash Virtual SAN – this 4-node reference architecture utilizes SanDisk’s 4TB Optimus MAX on a Lenovo x3650 M5 server platform. Using 8 VMs executing Microsoft SQL Server Standard Edition, this reference architecture hit a performance of 3.08 million NOPMs and 14.1 million TPMs.
  • VMware Horizon Virtual Desktop and Applications Solution with All-Flash Virtual SAN – this virtual desktop infrastructure utilizes SanDisk’s Lightning Gen. II SSDs and Dell r730 G13 servers. This solution can run 800 Horizon 6 virtual desktops, an industry first running on an end-to-end 12G all-flash VSAN Cluster, at a significantly lower TCO compared to HDD-based solutions. Testing showed that this solution could deploy  24 desktops per minute in a boot storm situation, bringing up 850 desktops in 35 minutes.
  • Horizon Virtual Desktop Solution with Hybrid VMware Virtual SAN – this reference architecture utilizes SanDisk’s Fusion ioMemory PCIe application accelerators and HP’s ProLiant DL360 Gen9 servers. The PCIe application accelerators are used for caching in a hybrid VMware Virtual SAN cluster.

SanDisk will be showcasing these new reference architectures at VMworld. SanDisk will be at booth #1920 during VMworld, taking place at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, August 30-September 3, 2015.
