Seagate Lyve Drive Rack & CORTX Announced

Back at the beginning of the year, Seagate unveiled its Lyve Drive Mobile system, of modular storage for enterprise, cloud, and edge. Today at their Datasphere Virtual Conference the company announced an open, flexible converged infrastructure, Seagate Lyve Drive Rack. Seagate also announced CORTX, a hardware-agnostic open-source object storage software, as well as a corresponding developer community.

Back at the beginning of the year, Seagate unveiled its Lyve Drive Mobile system, of modular storage for enterprise, cloud, and edge. Today at their Datasphere Virtual Conference the company announced an open, flexible converged infrastructure, Seagate Lyve Drive Rack. Seagate also announced CORTX, a hardware-agnostic open-source object storage software, as well as a corresponding developer community.

CORTX is an S3-compatible object storage platform and an open source project. As stated above, CORTX is hardware-agnostic and is intended to give users access to mass capacity-optimized data storage architectures. Its open-source nature can help users avoid vendor lock-in. As far as use cases go, the new software is said to be good for artificial intelligence, machine learning, hybrid cloud, the edge, high-performance computing, and more. Seagate stated they have several early adopters of CORTX including Toyota Motor Corporation and Fujitsu Limited.

Not only is CORTX open source-based, it is also community developed. Seagate is also announcing the CORTX Community. As the name implies, it is a community of open source researchers and developers that have been testing the software already. Both CORTX and the CORTX Community make Seagate’s latest contributions to open source and object storage. While Seagate is mainly thought of as a hard drive company, it was an early pioneer in object storage and was a member of the industry consortium that created the very first object storage specification: the SNIA OSD standard.

Seagate Lyve Drive Rack is hardware and software reference architecture that is powered 100% by CORTX. Lyve Drive Rack enables users to deploy CORTX and build their own mass capacity-optimized private storage cloud. How massive, the enclosure’s capacities start at 1.34PB. The new solution is said to offer economical and fast deployment of object storage, enabling discovery of valuable insights through rich data labeling of massive amounts of data. Seagate demoed the new Lyve Drive Rack while at the same time showing off their upcoming 20TB HAMR hard drives.

Availability

CORTX is available today from Github. Lyve Drive Rack and the 20TB HAMR HDDs will be available starting in December.
