Seagate Releases 14TB Drives

Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX) released a wide range of new 14TB hard drives, enhancing the company’s enterprise and specialty drive portfolio. Releasing no less than five new drive designs at the same time, Seagate has given us a lot to talk about. The new designs are IronWolf and IronWolf Pro for network attached storage (NAS) applications; the BarraCuda Pro desktop drive; surveillance-targeted SkyHawk; and Exos X14 for data centers.

Seagate's IronWolf 14TB drive targets the home, SOHO, and SMB NAS markets. The Ironwolf Pro 14TB targets the Commercial and Enterprise NAS markets. Both are built with multi-user environments in mind, and will likely support 180 or 300TB/year user workload rates respectively like all the other drives in the same line. They will continue to provide the same features we've come to expect from Seagate's Ironwolf line including RAID performance, dual-plane balance, rotational vibration (RV) sensors, advanced power management, and error recovery control. IronWolf and IronWolf Pro drives feature a 3-year and 5-year limited warranty respectively. While the information we were given doesn't specify mean times between failures, there's no reason to expect the new drives to deviate from the smaller drives in the same line which all rated to one million hours MTBF for the standard version or one point two million hours MTBF for the pro.

Seagate's BarraCuda Pro 14TB 3.5-inch HDD targets the desktop market and direct attached storage (DAS) systems. It's 7200 spindle speed is comparable to the current Ironwolf drives; as is its 256MB cache. It also comes with a long-lived five-year limited warranty.

Seagate's SkyHawk 14TB drive targets the surveillance market. It is tuned for 24/7 workloads, and equipped with ImagePerfect firmware intended to reduce dropped frames and downtime. Customers can also utilize SkyHawk Health Management technology that actively monitors and analyzes drive health.

Seagate's fifth new 14TB 3.5-inch HDD is the Exos X14. It is targeted at data center and cloud storage providers. We briefly talked about these when they were unveiled at Open Compute Project earlier this year in March. The helium-based Exos X14 also provides a 10% reduction in weight versus air nearline drives, and flexible formatting. They ship in a modular enterprise system (Exos E 4U106) for easy scaling up to 1.4PB density. Exos X14 drives feature “always-on” Seagate Secure protection, designed to encrypt data without performance degradation. Exos X14 drives offer a 5-year limited warranty, and are designed to meet US Government Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2, Level 2 Security certification, as well as the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (CC) ISO/EIC 15408 compliance standard.
