Synology DiskStation Manager 4.0 Released

Synology released their latest version of their DiskStation Manager, version 4.0. With this latest version comes a great integration with cloud-storage for mobile, home, and work computers and a stronger push towards easy setup and control. DSM 4.0 offers a new user interface, system information available at your fingertips, and even app support including free antivirus software to protect files on the NAS. Designed to work with x08 systems and newer, the latest DSM 4.0 software update is available to download now.

DiskStation Manager 4.0 brings about many new changes for mobile, home, and business users.

New Home and Home Office Features:

  • Antivirus Essential- Included antivirus software
  • Improved Apple support- added support for Airport Express/Extreme and integration with iCloud saves time in configuration
  • Enhanced mobile support- updated apps for iOS, Android (including tablets), and Amazon Kindle Fire
  • Cloud Station and QuickConnect- for easy file synchronization
  • Improved Package Center

New Business Features:

  • Improved ADS/ACL support- Edit and audit ACLs from within DSM
  • Improved notification system- Users can select which events will notify and which methods will be used (email, SMS, instant messaging, and even push notifications)
  • VPN client- The DiskStation can now act as a VPN server or client
  • VLAN support- DiskStations can now work over VLAN segments
  • DHCP server
  • Scheduled SMART scans
  • LUN backup software

With more devices offering app support, it wasn’t a huge shock seeing Synology making this push. They have already offered package downloads, although the latest method makes it easier for the user to select the application and install it on the system without first downloading an installation files to their computer beforehand.
