Synology has released an updated version of the DiskStation DS413j, its four-bay NAS which serves up to 16TB of storage for a home or small office network. The DS413j now ships with DiskStation Manager 4.1, and customers can use Synology’s Cloud Station and ezCloud technology to extend access to stored data across the Internet, including via apps for mobile platforms including iPhone, iPad and Android.

The DS413j’s feature set demonstrates the growing sophistication of the latest home storage devices. The DS413j’s media server streams to stereo systems, PlayStation 3, Microsoft XBox 360, and DLNA/UPnP compatible TVs and other media devices. DS Video allows iOS devices to manage and view videos, and DS Audio allows iOS and Android devices to stream music from the DS413j over the Internet.

PC users can back up their data to the DS413j using Synology’s free Data Replicator software, while Mac OS X users can take advantage of Time Machine integration. A browser-based wizard is provided for backing up data from the Synology DS413j to another Synology DiskStation or to an external hard drive via USB.

DS413j offers share-level AES 256-bit encryption to prevent unauthorized access to shared storage and offloads encryption from the CPU to improve file transfer speeds.
