Toshiba has announced the MC Series, Toshiba’s first enterprise high-capacity hard disk drives specifically designed for bulk storage systems and servers that support cloud-based applications and scale-out workloads. Its 3.5-inch form factor allows the MC Series to offer up to 5TB of storage with 7,200 RPM performance making it particularly suitable for workloads and storage requirements generated by cloud computing.

The MC Series comes in capacities of 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, and 5TB and supports the industry-standard cloud use-case workloads rating of up to 180TB per year, which is over three times the industry-standard workload rating of desktop class HDDs. In addition, the new MC Series supports 1TB per platter areal density, allowing businesses to save precious rack space all the while reducing the footprint and operational burden of cloud workload servers and storage systems. With its 5TB storage capacity per host connection, the new Toshiba HDD series increases capacity per SATA port and enables fewer disks to handle the same storage capacity. As a result, this reduces power and cooling costs on a per TB basis when compared to prior generation models with lower capacity per spindle. The MC Series also offers 6Gbit/s SATA interface speeds as well as Advanced Format sector technology, which enables compatibility with legacy applications and operating environments using aligned writes.
